This codec can transfer high-resolution music, though you'll need compatible devices and streaming services. The WH-1000XM4s is also able to connect two Bluetooth devices simultaneously and automatically switch between them as required. You can enable this feature via the Sony Headphones Connect app and it works flawlessly.

A subtle improvement over the XM3 is the sensitiveness of their touch panels. They respond faster to the touch of panels and are simpler to manage when making a phone call or listening to media. Sony has also added a feature to make voice calls more clear and precise during calls. This is an obvious and a nice addition.

While the WH1000XM4s aren't perfect, they're one of the most comfortable wireless headphones we've tested. They're comfortable, feel good to the touch, and have an excellent battery that lasts for more than 30 hours continuously. They can also be used passively using a TRS cable, which is ideal for those who travel or want to save power.

The WH1000XM4s provide a superior alternative to the Bowers & Wilkins Wireless Over-Ears Px7 S2. The Sonys are more comfortable, and their ANC can block out more ambient noise. They also come with a companion application that lets you adjust their audio performance and EQ settings are more flexible than B&W's. But the B&Ws have a better-built design, and they're able to connect with two Bluetooth devices simultaneously. They also support aptX HD and feature an AI-driven engine that attempts to boost compressed music to high-resolution. This is known as DSEE Extreme, and it enhances the clarity of music when listening to lossless audio files.

2. Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless

The $329 Bose QuietComfort45 noise-canceling headset is the latest version of a headset that is a popular choice among commuters and travelers all over the world. The new model does not reinvent the wheel. It retains the same formula that made its predecessor so successful, while adding the USB-C port and improved noise cancellation.

These over-ear Bose headsets have a premium feel and look, just like the QC 35 II headphones that came before them. The headband is made of plastic, yet it is sturdy and comfortable with hinges made of metal at the pivot points and the familiar ratcheting action when you open or Blutooth Headphones retract the earcups. The cups feature soft, cushioned pads that fit comfortably over the ears and do not apply pressure to your head. They weigh 238 grams and are fairly compact when folded. They can be paired with a sweater or coat since they can be worn even when not on your head.

Despite their reputation as comfortable headphones however, the QC45s don't provide the best sound at this price point. The frequencies are comparatively flat and lack the details that higher-end headphones may be able to bring out. The higher registers tend to be boosted and is suitable for most music but can become a problem for more delicate or intricate music genres. The bass is decent but lacks power.

One thing that's not included is the ability to pause playback when you take off the headset. This is a feature that Bose's rivals have offered for many years. Another omission was the lack of an in-app EQ. Bose offers preset EQ settings in the app however it would be nice to have a manual control.

The QC45s also come with four built-in microphones that hear your voice when you make calls. The call quality is generally excellent but the headphones don't have the nifty capability to turn off your voice during playback, which is something other wireless headphones do. Update as of February 2022, a firmware upgrade to the QC45s offered manual EQ options in the audio app which is a welcome improvement.

Focal is a French audio brand known for its high-performance headphones with long lasting comfort and Blutooth Headphones a style that let listeners know they're listening to something truly special. Their first venture into wireless noise cancelling headphones, the Bathys are stunning headphones that sound and look fantastic. They also have a built-in high-performance USB DAC which means you can use them for wireless and wired listening.

The Bathys come with a great battery life, with Focal promising 30 hours of continuous Bluetooth playtime. We actually got more from them and got over 40 hours on average of just one charge. If you do need to recharge, there's a light on the right ear cup that turns red when the earphone needs to be charged.

For headphones at this price, they come with many features. They can connect to multiple devices simultaneously and have automatic pairing. (You will need to select the device you want to pair with manually every time you listen.) The headphones come with an inbuilt microphone that can be used with voice assistants, such as Siri or Alexa. The headphones have an easy-to use interface that makes it simple to control music and make calls.

They cut down the background sound by around 9 decibels per hour on average. This isn't as impressive as the ANC in the Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless, however it's still pretty effective.

In our tests of headphone sound quality in our tests of headphone sound quality, the Bathys did well overall, with a the frequency response which generally matches the SoundGuys headphone preference curve, with only minor deviations in the mids and bass. The Bathys have a booming sound profile which can make instruments, vocals and cymbals look a bit unreal.

They also have excellent leakage resistance, meaning you can wear them out in public without worrying about others hearing your music. Their mic has passable recording quality through Bluetooth with only slight distortion in the mid - to high treble frequency range.

4. Sennheiser Momentum 4

The Sennheiser Momentum Wireless are a new update to the company's top-of-the-line Bluetooth headphones. The Momentum 3 was a solid but not a great entry in this category. The latest pair is a step up from the previous generation, with an elegant design, enhanced gesture control, and a huge battery life.

The improvements are subtle but can make for an over-ear pair of headphones that feel like an upgrade. The Momentum 4s are flat and do not fold. They come with a hardshell case that protects them while traveling. They also follow the style of many other recent Bluetooth headphones, like the ones from Sony and Bowers & Wilkins, to be incredibly device-agnostic. They work with both Apple iPhones as well as Android phones, but do not have the AirPods additional features such as Find My Support and head-tracked spatial audio.

The most obvious difference in this model is the huge battery that promises up to 60 hours of playback with the noise cancellation feature enabled. This is more than twice as much as most of the competitors and sufficient to take a multi-day journey without worrying about finding an outlet.

Engadget senior editor Billy Steele gave the headphones an 82 rating with a focus on their audio quality and ANC as their main strengths. His only complaint is that they lack a sense gravitas in the mids and treble, meaning that orchestral pieces tend to sound flat instead of grand. The bass is rounded, but it's easy to over-emphasize and can cause fatigue in songs with strong bass lines, like the drums in As I Lay Dying's Forever. The cymbals also sound sizzled rather than full, and there's no real feeling of depth in the lows.

The Momentum 4s should not cause pressure on your neck or ear. However they can be a bit difficult to wear in the house or during longer listening sessions. They can move around on your head with intense head movements. This could cause them to unexpectedly wake up, which can be distracting when you are listening to music or calls. They stop automatically after 15 minutes, and can be switched off manually with the power button.
